SCHS has officially received our accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).  We were approved for accreditation for the next six years (2018-2024), with a brief revisit to confirm continued progress in 2021.

Attached to this post is the letter we received from WASC with the accreditation status as well as the six-year Action Plan that we created as part of our Self Study and revised based on feedback from the WASC Visiting Committee.  This Action Plan will guide us in our on-going improvement efforts over the next few years.

Thank you to the students, parents, school staff, and district personnel that played a role in this important accreditation process.

Bruin Community,

I’m very happy to announce that Burt Codera has accepted the role of Head Varsity Football Coach as well as becoming one of our Physical Education teachers starting in the 18/19 school year.

Coach Codera has been coaching football at De Anza College for the past eight years and also has prior experience in our community coaching at the Pop Warner level.  He is currently teaching PE at Don Callejon school and has an excellent reputation as both a coach and an educator.

On the personal side, Coach Codera has strong community ties, being proud that his great grandparents moved from Portugal to Santa Clara and considering himself a local guy ever since. He lives locally with his wife, who is also an educator.

Please help me in welcoming our new football coach, Burt Codera.

Sincerely,

Gregory Shelby

Dear Santa Clara Unified Families and Community:

As you know, just before the February break there was a school shooting at a Parkland, Florida high school. The news of this tragedy and others before it have left our nation and community shaken and heartbroken for the victims and for their families, friends, peers, and communities that mourn their loss.

We want to assure you that our schools are safe places for our students and staff. This is our highest priority.

School Safety

We partner with our local police departments to conduct annual “Run. Hide. Defend” trainings and drills on our campuses so that staff and students are as prepared as we can be in the event the unthinkable happens on one of our campuses. Police departments receive tactical training developed by the FBI and Department of Homeland Security. In addition, our schools conduct annual reviews and updates of School Safety Plans. There are also many health and wellness structures in place, including increased academic and mental health counselors and Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS) programs.

In the event of an emergency on your child’s campus, we enact our School Safety Plans. We secure students and staff, notify law enforcement who take over management of the incident, and notify families. The district will communicate with you through the primary phone and email address listed in your child’s school records. Please make sure you update your child’s school as your contact information changes.

Talking with Students

These unimaginable events are so difficult to understand, let alone explain to students. There are links below to resources to help you navigate conversations within your families and our community.

Walkouts

We are aware of a number of nationwide walkouts being planned. We know you entrust us with your child’s safety. Student safety is our number one concern and we are actively planning for varying scenarios. The walkout gaining the most interest from students is planned for March 14 from 10:00 to 10:17 a.m. and is not a protest, but a remembrance event for the 17 lives lost in the Parkland, Florida shooting as well as a plea for school safety.

Our secondary school students are planning supervised remembrance activities to take place on campus during those 17 minutes for students who wish to participate. Students who do not want to participate, for many varying reasons, may remain in class. We are reminding and expecting students and community members to be open to varying opinions and to keep communication and behavior toward one another peaceful, respectful, and safe. We are not facilitating one message or belief over another, we are creating safe space for all students during a time many wish to explore and exercise their right to free speech through a student-initiated event. We would like all students to remain on campus and not miss their educational day. Those who choose to leave campus or not return to class after the activity are subject to an unexcused absence.

At our elementary schools, we are not discussing the Parkland tragedy or walkout events on a schoolwide level, but will provide safe and supportive space for individual students who want to speak with a trusted adult. Please let your school office or teacher know if your child needs counseling support.

If you have any questions or thoughts you would like to share with us, we would like to hear from you. Please contact Public Information Officer, Jennifer Dericco, at jdericco@scusd.net.

Most sincerely,

Stanley Rose III, Ed.D.

Superintendent

Students and Parents,

Recently counselors, administrators and registrars met to clarify criteria for including external courses, including those taken at local colleges, on high school transcripts.  We analyzed practices in nearby districts, and centered our discussion on several key considerations: graduation requirements, college eligibility requirements, equity, and what’s best for our students.

Beginning in the 2018-19 school year, external courses, including those taken at local colleges, will be included on SCUSD high school transcripts when they meet one of the following criteria:

  1. Graduation Requirement: The course is needed for graduation and unavailable at the student’s high school due to scheduling conflicts, OR the course is needed to remediate (make up) a course in which the student initially earned a F.

  2. College Eligibility: The course is needed to remediate (make up) a UC/CSU approved course in which the student initially earned a D or F, and the course is unavailable at the student’s high school due to scheduling conflicts.

NOTE:  The student must obtain prior approval from the school principal before taking an external course that will be included on the high school transcript.

All other external courses will not appear on the high school transcript, however the student is encouraged to include external course transcripts in his/her college application

More will be shared about this in an upcoming Bruin Country Update.

Hello Bruin Community,

I have two important updates for you.

HAWK Beacon Installation on Benton & Moraga:

As many of you know, the City of Santa Clara is installing new HAWK Beacons around the city, and one of them will be going in at the intersection in front of SCHS.  This will be a major improvement for student safety, and it should help with traffic flow as well.  We have finally received notification of the timeline, and construction work should be starting within the next week or so.  The city anticipates finishing the project by mid November.  There will be some traffic delays during the construction, but I think we can all agree that these will be worth it.

The way HAWK Beacons work blends the benefits of a full lighted crosswalk with the convenience of turning off during non-peak times.  If you haven't experienced one yet, I encourage you to check out this video made to explain how HAWK Beacons work.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdauhuZaChM&feature=youtu.be

The HAWK Beacons are off most of the time, allowing through traffic to travel unimpeded.  At these times, there will be a symbol indicating to pedestrians not to walk.  When a pedestrian triggers the system, it will begin by going through flashing yellow, solid yellow, solid red, and flashing red lights before returning to it's normal off position.  Rules for all these lights are exactly the same as other times lights are used.  When the light turns red, pedestrians will be allowed to cross similar to a normal lighted crosswalk.

We recognize that there will be a learning curve with this new system, and we encourage everyone to be patient, look carefully, and keep student safety at the heart of what we all do.

PSAT Test on October 11:

SCHS will be hosting a PSAT test on October 11.  Because of the major benefits of taking this test in terms of college preparedness, our district is paying for any  sophomores who sign up to take the test for free.  Juniors are also welcome to sign up at a cost of $16.   So far, over 400 students have signed up to take the test.  We have a limited number left, and we will continue to allow students to sign up until either we run out of tests or Friday, October 6 (whichever comes first).  If your student wants to sign up, sophomores can do so by going to the counseling office, and juniors can do so by visiting our bookkeeper.

The test starts at 7:30 am and lasts until about lunchtime.  Students will miss 3rd period that day.  Students who take the test will automatically be excused from 3rd period.  For students that ride the bus, an additional morning bus run will happen on October 11.  All students who are taking the test should arrive by 7:15 with their photo ID and pencils.

For students who are not taking the test, this is a normal school day and these students will follow the standard Wednesday bell schedule.

Sincerely,

Gregory Shelby

Principal, SCHS

Hello Bruin Community,

We are in the ever-busy fall, when it seems like the only thing that can match our full schedule is our energetic student body.  We've had a quite success Club Fair to help students engage with their peers in meaningful ways, and we have recently passed the halfway point of the first quarter.  We have several upcoming events that I want to highlight for you.

Senior Parent Meeting:

On Wednesday at 7:00 pm in our SCHS Theater, we invite all parents of senior students to a meeting hosted by our counseling department.  The agenda will focus on how to best support your senior students as they go through this important year and prepare for college/career.  We will also be highlighting many of the memorable events that make senior year so special.  We will be hosting similar parent nights for the other classes on upcoming dates.  Junior parents will meet on October 4, sophomores on November 1, and freshmen on January 17.

DACA Information Night:

Our district strives to support all of our students and families.  For families and friends of Dreamers affected by the news about DACA, the district is hosting an information night so that people can get the most up-to-date and accurate understanding of what is going on with DACA and how. the district will be responding.  This meeting will be hosted at Scott Lane Elementary (1925 Scott Lane Blvd) on Wednesday, 9/20/17, at 6:30 pm.  Interpreters and child care will be provided.  A flyer about this event is attached.

Homecoming:

One of the highlights of the year is upon us.  This week is our Homecoming Week.  Four important notes for families to know about include:

1) There is an alternate schedule for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.  If you haven't seen the schedule yet, this schedule is listed on schoolloop.

    • Wednesday: Per 1 - 10:00-10:54 / Per 3 - 11:00-12:00 / Lunch - 12:00-12:35 / Per 5 - 12:41-1:35 / Per 7 - 1:41-2:35

    • Thursday: Use the Mon/Tue/Fri Schedule (not the normal Thursday block schedule)

    • Friday: Per 2 - 8:26-9:20 / HC Rally - 9:30-10:21 / Per 4 - 10:31-11:30 / Lunch - 11:30-12:05 / Per 6 - 12:11-1:052

2) On Thursday Night, we will be hosting Homecoming parade float building in our quad from 3:00 pm to 10:00 pm.  The floats for our Homecoming Parade reflect the ingenuity of our students and are among the best high school floats I've ever seen.  This float building night is often as memorable as the Homecoming events themselves.  Parents are welcome to stay.  There will be a limited number of students who will be allowed to stay past 10:00 pm, and those students have to permission slips that are given by the SBO and signed by parents.  If you don't sign a slip, you should know that your student will be leaving campus no later than 10:00 pm.

3) Our Homecoming Parade starts at 1:30 pm on Friday.  We leave from the front of the school, heading toward Pomeroy Elementary.  We use El Sobrante to cross Kiely, weaving our way over to Central Park Elementary before returning to SCHS.  Passing the two elementary schools and seeing the delight on the young faces is definitely a highlight of the parade.  Typically, over 400 students (sometimes  participate in the parade, and these students all get free admission to the game that night.

4) Our actual Homecoming Ceremony follows the Frosh/Soph football game on Friday.  This typically puts us at around 6:15 or 6:30.  The varsity Homecoming game versus Gunn HS will start at 7:15 pm.  We invite all families to come out and join this festive event.

Parent Education Night:

On Wednesday, September 27 at 7:00 pm, our Wellness Center will be hosting a Parent Education Night on Teen Stress & Anxiety.  Find out more by visiting: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/parent-education-night-stress-anxiety-your-teen-tickets-37824345636

As always, I encourage parents who are on Facebook to sign up for the SCHS PTSA Facebook page.  More importantly, I encourage you to stay active in your teenager's life, communicating with them, their teachers, and others about what is going on academically, socially, and emotionally with your student.

Sincerely,

Gregory Shelby

Hello Bruin Community,

The school year is off to a solid start, and we have much to celebrate.  Due to the efforts of our counseling department, the overwhelming majority of students have had their schedules finalized.  Our teachers are welcoming students into classes.  As I observe the campus, I see smiles in the quad and engagement in the classrooms.

Our annual Back to School Night is coming up.  Attached to this email is a copy of the letter that is on the way to each of your houses.  Back to School Night will be held on the evening of Wednesday, September 6.  At this event, in addition to 10 minute sessions with each of your student's teachers, you'll be introduced to the SCHS admin team and leaders from important groups including the PTSA, Athletic Boosters, and Music Boosters.  There will also be representatives from several programs of interest such as SVCTE and our Workability program.

The basic timing of the evening is as follows:

  • Orientation Meeting for all parents in the gym from 6:30 to 7:00 pm
  • Classroom visits, 10 minutes for each period, with 5 minutes between periods, from 7:10 to 8:50 pm
  • PTSA Silent Auction in the main gym from 6:00 to 9:00 pm

Sincerely,

Gregory Shelby

Principal, SCHS
