Bruin Country - Principal's Update 5/18/18 (Day of the Arts, Seniors Awards, Finals)
Posted by: Gregory Shelby Published: 5/18/18

Hello Bruin Community,

I have a handful of items to share about upcoming events that we want to highlight.

DAY OF THE ARTS / NIGHT OF THE ARTS:

This year is the 15th consecutive year that SCHS has celebrated the Day of the Arts.  After school on Wednesday, May 23, our small gym will be transformed into an art gallery with hundreds of the best works of student art from this year.  A reception will be held at 6 pm on May 23 for parents and the community to come and see the artwork.  The next day, May 24, students will be able to visit the art show with their teachers in class, at lunch, or after school until 2:30.  During the day there will also be music provided by students from the Jazz and Orchestra classes.  The show will be taken down on the 24th after school, and the artwork will be given back to the students who created them.  This year, we are adding a second connected event, which is the Night of the Arts on Friday, May 25, at 7 pm in the theater.  This Night will consist of small acts performed by our drama students.  The Day of the Arts and now the Night of the Arts exist to recognize the work that students in our Visual and Performing Arts classes have created.  The art on the walls and tables of the gym as well as the musical and dramatic performances  show students, parents, teachers, and the community what young people can do if they apply their own attention and their own abilities.

SENIOR AWARDS NIGHT:

One of our favorite counseling events of the year is our Senior Awards Night, which is a time to recognize our graduates who have earned various awards, honors, and scholarships.  For this event on Wednesday, May 30, at 7:00 pm, we celebrate our seniors in a somewhat cafe-like environment in our gym (thanks to the PTSA for refreshments).  One of the interesting elements is that there are quite a few scholarships that are announced for the first time at this event, so the recipients are surprised in the moment.  All students honored at this event also get to wear a special cord at graduation and get their specific honor listed in the graduation program.  Seniors, if you have any outside awards of which we may be unaware, please let the counseling office know ASAP.

FINALS:

For seniors, we will hold finals on Wednesday and Thursday, May 30-31, during the normal block schedule.

For juniors, sophomores, and freshmen, their is a special Finals Schedule the following week, which is:
