Bruin Country Principal's Update (Distance Learning for Fall Semester, Athletics)

Hello Bruin Community,

I hope your family is safe, together, and healthy during this unique summer.  You just received a very important update from our school district, and I wanted to emphasize the key pieces as it relates to SCHS.  Additionally, I have an update related to athletics.

DISTANCE LEARNING FOR FALL SEMESTER

The district has announced that our comprehensive middle and high schools (including SCHS) will be using distance learning for nearly all students at least through the first semester.  This means that you will not need to decide at this time between the various instructional models.

The district will continue to monitor data related to the COVID-19 pandemic and, if local conditions are deemed sufficiently safe by the state, county, and district, we will look into moving into hybrid or in-person models for the spring semester.  If so, we will have information out to families by November about your options for moving forward in spring semester.  For this semester though, we will stay in distance learning.   Our whole school, and especially our teachers, are committed to making this distance learning experience as robust and educationally sound as we possibly can.  I have great faith in our educational team, and I look forward to seeing our team work with our students in thoughtful, creative, and substantive ways.

ATHLETICS

Based on guidance from the CIF (the state’s governing body for high school athletics), our Central Coast Section has made some decisions related to restarting sports if the conditions become safe enough to do so.   There will be no athletic events during the first semester, but, if conditions improve enough, there is a plan that will allow all our sports to have a season of play, even if it is slightly condensed compared to previous years.  That plan is to split sports into two seasons.  Season 1 would have games from January through March, while Season 2 would have games between March and June.  Again, athletic participation will only be allowed if it is deemed safe by our state, county, and district, but we have a plan if we can get to that level of safety.  The sports for each season will be as follows:

  • Season 1: Cross Country, Field Hockey, Football, Water Polo (B & G), Volleyball  (B & G)

  • Season 2: Badminton, Baseball, Basketball  (B & G), Golf  (B & G), Soccer  (B & G), Softball, Swim & Dive, Tennis  (B & G), Track & Field,  Wrestling  (B & G)

  • TBD: Stunt Cheer

Sincerely,

Gregory Shelby
