Bruin Country Principal's Update (Senior Updates, On-Line Safety, Testing Updates, BTSN Follow-up)

Información del Director en Español

Hello Bruin Community,

Here are several updates for our community.  Please be safe this weekend given the situation with our air quality.

SENIOR UPDATES

  • Our SCHS Counseling Department has put together a robust set of activities for our seniors this fall.  There are two events in September that directly involve parents, which are our Senior Parent Night on September 16 at 7:00pm and our Financial Aid Night on September 30 at 7:00pm.  Both are being held via Zoom, and the links are both here and on our school calendar.  Live Spanish translation will be available, but this translation feature only works on traditional computers, not chromebooks.

  • Senior Portraits - Senior Portraits are now available through Prestige Studios. Here is their brochure. There will be a sitting fee and fee for portraits. Sign up for an appointment at the San Carlos or Hayward studios. The San Jose studio is currently not open. Use this link to sign up for an appointment.  In order for a senior portrait to be added to the yearbook, it must be taken at Prestige Portraits by December 11, 2020.  If you are unable to go to the studio, you can still submit your own yearbook/school photo through the Yearbook process. Please visit the Yearbook page on schoolloop for more information.  If you have questions regarding senior portraits, please contact Leanne Konicek - lkonicek@scusd.net.  If you have questions regarding the yearbook, please contact Hannah Blue - hblue@scusd.net

ON-LINE SAFETY

  • We want to remind all students and parents of the importance of on-line safety and the need to avoid cyberbullying or other inappropriate on-line activity.  In this all-digital environment, this is especially true.  Students, be wise about what sites you visit, what information you share, and with whom you share that information.  Remember that what you post is neither anonymous or temporary, and people are not always who they say they are.  Parents, please make sure to stay aware of your students on-line activities. If you are aware of inappropriate on-line activity affecting any of our students, please report it.

TESTING UPDATES:

  • PSAT & SAT - Due to coronavirus and the unavailability of an online version of the PSAT and SAT, no schools in our district will be hosting a PSAT or SAT test this fall.  As long as safety conditions allow, we will host both the PSAT and SAT in the spring, and the district plans to fund the PSAT for sophomores and the SAT for juniors as planned.

  • AP Sign-ups - While AP Exams will not happen until May, students will be signing up for their AP exams in the next month or two.  The process happens in the AP classrooms under the direction of the teachers. AP exams are still being paid for by the school district.

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT FOLLOW-UP

  • Thanks again to all parents who came to our on-line Back To School Night last week.  We had to make some last-minute changes to the classroom session Zoom links.  While a large majority of the revised Zoom links worked well, there were a few teachers that had sessions that didn’t work at that moment.  If your student was in a class that had an issue with their links, you should expect that the teacher will reach out to you via loopmail with information about his or her class. Some teachers have already made this outreach, and others will send out their communication within the next week.

Sincerely,

Gregory Shelby

Principal, SCHS
