Bruin Country Community Updates

Hello Bruin Community,

This Bruin Country Update doesn't have any new items, just reminders and clarifications about our upcoming PSAT test and then our Homecoming week.  Please note the days when school will start at different times for students.

PSAT:

On Wednesday, 10/10/18, we are providing the PSAT test to all sophomores as well as any juniors who chose to sign up.  All students who are set to take the test need to arrive by 7:15 am to their testing location.  Check your schoolloop portals for individualized testing locations.  Students who are taking the test need to bring their photo ID, a couple of pencils, and (optionally) an approved calculator.  Please note that the majority of juniors will be taking the test across the street in the fellowship hall of the First Baptist Church and these students have been provided with a parent permission slip that will allow them to be off campus to take the test.  The proctors will all be SCUSD employees.

For freshmen, seniors, and those juniors who are choosing not to take the test, school will start at the normal Wednesday time of 10:00 am.  Students who are taking the test will miss all of 3rd period and possibly part of 5th period, and those absences will automatically be excused.

HOMECOMING WEEK:

Please note that the Homecoming week schedule has slightly different start and/or end times on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.  Additionally, there is no school on Monday due to a Professional Development Day.  Our normal bus schedule will be used.  The schedule is as follows:

Spirit Days - Each day of this week is a themed dress-up day.  Tuesday is Tourist Day.  Wednesday is Bay Area Day.  Thursday is Pajama Day.  Friday is School Spirit Day (wearing blue and gold or a class shirt).

Float Building - On Thursday, 10/18/18, students will be on campus in the quad building floats.  All students are welcome to help out anytime from 3:04 to 10:00 pm, and parents are invited to visit/help as well.  A limited number of students will stay past 10:00 pm, and all of these students will have received special permission slips prior to the event.  This float building night is a lot of fun, and I encourage students and parents to come check it out.

Parade - The parade on Friday, 10/19/18, is optional for students, and many students will choose to participate as part of their class, a club, the band, or the spirit squad.  Parents are welcome to line up to see the parade anywhere along the route.  We will leave SCHS heading west, turn right on Pomeroy (passing Pomeroy Elementary), turn right on El Sobrante, cross over Kiely, turn right on Crowley, turn right on Sonoma Place (passing Central Park Elementary), turn left on Benton, and return to SCHS.  Please note that the floats are designed to be best viewed from the driver's side.

Ceremony - The Homecoming ceremony will occur on Friday, 10/19/18, between the Frosh/Soph and Varsity football games.  While the time may fluctuate slightly because of the games, the ceremony is scheduled to start at around 6:15 pm.

Dance - On Saturday, 10/20/18, we will be hosting our Homecoming Dance from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm on campus.  Tickets can be purchased for a discount ($13 w/ ASB or $16 w/out ASB) ahead of time in the SBO or for $20 at the door.

Hello Bruin Community,

The school year always has an ebb and flow to it, and we are in the part of the year where students are feeling more settled in here at SCHS.  We’ve had our first rally (our Renaissance Rally that celebrates academic excellence and improvement), our Club Fair, and our first few football games.  Students have finished one or more unit exams in most classes and know their teachers pretty well. Faces around campus are more familiar, and our freshmen now generally feel they are a full part of the Bruin community on campus, welcomed by our upperclassmen.  As we head into the next month, classes will be in full gear and students will get the bonding experience of Homecoming.

This is my first Bruin Country Update since the passing of PE Teacher Warren Johnson just over two weeks ago.  Mr. Johnson was a friend, colleague, teacher, mentor, and coach to many in our community over the last 20 years, and he is greatly missed.  In the last few weeks, I have seen our community come together in shock, in grief, and in support of one another. Our Wellness Center has helped students and staff alike, and I am very grateful for the support we received from throughout our district.  As I mentioned in my previous message, be aware that grief can come at different times for different people and there may be students who didn’t even know Mr. Johnson that could be affected by this, so please look out for each other, knowing that SCHS will support any who need it.

CHROMEBOOK MAINTENANCE & SUPPORT - About 99% of SCHS students now have their chromebooks, and we are working on getting to those last few students who had missed the pick-up day.  Our teachers will be using them regularly. As an example, yesterday morning I dropped in on six different classes, and four of those classes happened to be using the devices during my visit.  Our recommendation to students is to charge the chromebooks overnight at home each night and to consistently use the neoprene cases to help protect the devices. If students have any difficulties with their chromebooks or need to report anything to us, students should go to the computer kiosk in the counseling office and submit a request to be pulled out of class.  These students will be seen as soon as possible. We expect a wait of a few days in the first few weeks, and responses will get faster over time as students make it through the learning curve with their new devices.

PTSA SURVEY - Our Parent / Teacher Student Association (PTSA) is participating in the National PTA School of Excellence program. As part of the process, National PTA requests feedback from families, administrators and teachers at two points in the school year—the beginning and the end. Your feedback will help National PTA generate a customized guide which will provide specific recommendations for improving our family-school partnership and achieving excellence.  Please take 5-10 minutes to reflect on your experience at this school and complete the survey by going to  http://bit.ly/SCHSexcelSurvey (In Spanish: http://bit.ly/SCHSencuesta).  This survey is completely anonymous. Please complete the survey October 15, 2018.  Additionally, I encourage all families to join the PTSA and to learn more about what’s going on with PTSA by joining their SCHS PTSA Facebook page.

PSAT - On October 10, all sophomores and many juniors will be taking the PSAT test.  Sophomores are automatically signed up for free, and juniors who want to take the test can sign up with our Bookkeeper this week by Friday at 3:15 pm.  Test takes need to arrive 7:30 am. It is a normal bell schedule for students who are not taking the test, and test takers will miss (and be automatically excused for) 3rd period. Exact locations will be announced soon.

HOMECOMING - One of our more memorable events each year is our Homecoming Week, which includes lunchtime activities, dress-up days, video skits, float building, a rally, a parade (last year about 500 students walked in the parade), the Homecoming ceremony, and a football game.  For parents, the public part of the week is:

    • 3:00pm-10:00pm - Float Building in the Quad (parents are welcome to be part of this)

  • Friday, 10/19

    • 1:30pm-2:30pm - Parade for Court, Floats, Clubs, and Classes (leaving SCHS, going by Pomeroy Elementary, crossing over Kiely, going by Central Park Elementary, and returning to SCHS)

    • 4:15 pm - Frosh/Soph Football Kickoff

    • ~6:15-6:45pm - Court Ceremony (occurs between the Frosh/Soph and Varsity games)

    • 7:15 pm - Varsity Football Kickoff

UPCOMING MAJOR EVENING EVENTS:

Hello Bruin Community,

I want to welcome our new students and parents to our SCHS community as well as welcome back those who are returning to us.  School is off to a very good start, with students, teachers, and staff back to their hard work.  Our orientation events prior to school, our first day of school, and our first week have been quite smooth.  Credit for this goes to many people, but I want to highlight our counselors who are well ahead of schedule in having students in the best classes for them, our office staff for their professionalism, and the juniors and seniors who have served as Link Crew Leaders, making sure that our freshmen felt welcome and included both before school and in the first few days.

Today’s Bruin Country Update will be a bit longer than usual.  I typically try to keep it to two or three main topics, but there are several important things for families to know about in this first edition of the school year.  These include our Back to School Night, our plan for student Chromebooks, a presentation from SCPD, biometrics for our lunch lines, PSAT for all sophomores, SCHS receiving a state-wide award, and an invitation to join our School Site Council.

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT - We will be hold our annual Back to School Night on Wednesday, September 5th.  This night is a great night to meet your students’ teachers, learn about ways parents can get involved, make connections with other members of our community, and peruse our Silent Auction.  We will be sending out a formal mailing about this event shortly, but the basic schedule is:

  • 6:00-6:20 PTSA Meeting for all parents in the SCHS Theater
  • 6:30-6:50 Parent Welcome in the Main Gym
  • 7:00-8:30 Visiting Teachers/Classes

STUDENT CHROMEBOOKS - Last year, we were able to distribute Chromebooks to students in the sophomore and junior classes.  This year, we are able to distribute Chromebooks to all students.  Last year’s sophomores and juniors, who have returned this year as juniors and seniors, already have their devices.  In the coming weeks, we will be distributing Chromebooks to the freshmen, sophomores, and those juniors and seniors who are new to SCHS.  To prepare parents who have questions about this, we will be hosting a Chromebook Parent Information Night on Wednesday, August 29th, at 7:00 pm in the SCHS Theater. If you can attend this event, we will go over the process for distribution, the students’ responsibilities, how teachers tend to use the devices (with a panel of teachers sharing their practices), and answer any questions that parent may have.  Additionally, students will receive a training on responsible use of the Chromebooks in one of their classes and there will be a document that parents and students will need to sign before receiving their Chromebooks.  The actual distribution of the student Chromebooks will occur on:

  • Monday, August 27 – Juniors and Seniors who are new to SCHS will receive Chromebooks from Vice Principal Terry Flora
  • September 5 & 6 – All Sophomores receive Chromebooks via their English classes
  • September 12 & 13 – All Freshmen receive Chromebooks via their English classes

PRESENTATION FROM SCPD ON LAWS FOR JUVENILES AROUND SEX & HARASSMENT - Our school is fortunate to have a very positive relationship with the Santa Clara Police Department.  Our partners at the SCPD have created a presentation for high school students to make sure students are aware of laws for juveniles that pertain to sex, sexual harassment, and other related issues.  Recognizing that students who are uninformed or misinformed are more likely to make ill-advised choices, our school, our district, and the SCPD all feel it is very important to have students be as fully aware of the law as possible.  This same presentation was given by police officers to Wilcox students last spring, and it was well received.  We will be hosting these presentations on Friday, September 7th.

BIOMETRICS FOR OUR BREAKFAST & LUNCH LINES – Our district is moving to biometrics (thumb prints) for purchasing breakfasts and lunches.  This system will both be faster and more secure than our previous system.  At SCHS, we will have students stop by our scanning station in the quad during lunch in the week of September 10th-14th, and we will be switching from our current system to the biometric system for breakfast and lunch lines on Monday, September 17th.  We recognize that there are some parents who may have concerns about this, and there is an info sheet, and, if applicable, an opt-out form attached at the bottom.

PSAT FREE FOR ALL SOPHOMORES – Our district is graciously paying for students to take college-preparedness tests, including the PSAT, SAT, ACT, and AP Tests (one time per test).  The first of these to be relevant this year is the PSAT, which is primarily intended for sophomores and juniors.  Our district will be paying for all sophomores to take the PSAT on Wednesday, October 10th, here at SCHS.  Juniors who want to take the test again can pay to do so, and information on that will be coming out soon.  In March, we will be paying for all juniors to take the SAT.

RACE TO SUBMIT AWARD FOR FINANCIAL AID PREPAREDNESS – I’m happy to share that Santa Clara HS is being recognized as one of the best schools in the state at making students aware of and applying for financial aid for college.  The California Student Aid Commission held a contest last year for all California schools to see which schools did the best at having their seniors apply for financial aid by using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the California Dream Act Application (CADAA).  We were ranked as the best school of our size in the state, and, along with 34 other schools, will be honored at a ceremony at the state capital.  Multiple people deserve credit for this accomplishment, but I especially want to acknowledge our College & Career Resource Technician Anthony Butler and our wonderful Counseling Department.

SCHOOL SITE COUNCIL - Our School Site Council is an elected body made up of parents, students, teachers, classified staff, and myself that creates our Single Plan for Student Achievement, monitors our progress with this plan, and allocates funds to help improve the educational experience of our students.  This year, we will be electing two additional parent members.  These parents will serve a two-year term in which they attend monthly meetings that start at 5:00pm and usually last 60-90 minutes.  The election will take place during Back to School Night.  Parents, if you are interested in having your name on that ballot, please email me at gshelby@scusd.net expressing your interest by Friday, August 31st.

UPCOMING MAJOR EVENING EVENTS

  • Wednesday, August 29 – Chromebook Parent Information Night in the SCHS Theater at 7:00pm
  • Monday, September 3 – Labor Day – NO SCHOOL
  • Wednesday, September 5 – PTSA General Session in the SCHS Theater at 6:00 pm
  • Wednesday, September 5 – Back to School Night in the SCHS Main Gym at 6:30 pm
  • Wednesday, September 12 – Athletic Boosters Meeting in the Conference Room at 7:00pm
  • Wednesday, September 19 – PTSA Meeting in the Conference Room at 6:00 pm
